Patience is the third Paramita and for me the most difficult one. Patience is the willingness to rest at ease with anything that is, as it is, especially anger. Patience is the antidote to anger and one of two Paramitas that help us develop and keep merit or good Karma. Anger although the most destructive of all our emotions essentially gives us the clarity to see just how deeply we divide ourselves from others, me versus them, and between our desire and aversion. Patience gives us the space and time to react in a compassionate and bodhisattva-like way. When we breathe, evaluate, and act, we always stand a better chance of success in emotionally laden situations. Here is where meditation practice comes into play as this moment of just our breath and the space we can find in it grows and grows. But we need Patience with ourselves first on the meditation cushion not judging our meditation. we simply do it without thinking it was good or bad focused or distracted. then we practise with our family and then our friends and finally even the most difficult customers are handled with ease.
A good example of Patience is not taking things too personally when someone wrongs us. Easily said but not done. We need to see the anger arise in ourselves, look at it, feel it, analyse it, measure it, and then when it subsides into emptiness we move on in clarity and act with compassion. Our best friends here are humour and ease. We need to clearly understand the situation to act well and patience helps us. In this way, we develop inner strength and resilience. So be kind and patient with yourself today and allow it to spread to others.
