Book of Enoch vision and the Order of Enoch: a lone robed figure carried on cloud and lightning toward a crystal wall ringed with tongues of fire

Book of Enoch: The Man Who Walked Into Hell — The Order of Enoch, Part 1 S2 E5

The Book of Enoch describes a man walking straight into a house of crystal that is hot as fire and cold as ice, and 1 Enoch 14 reads less like metaphor than a clinical transcript. This is The Order of Enoch, Part 1: what the Book of Enoch actually says, what Stanislav Grof’s research makes of it, and why the line between a vision and a spiritual emergency is whether anyone is holding the other end of the rope.

Ezekiel saw the wheels from a river in exile. He never says he walked toward them. Enoch did.

The Book of Enoch: A House of Crystal, Hot as Fire and Cold as Ice

🕯 — 1 Enoch 14:10, 13–14 Charles trans., 1917

“And I went into the tongues of fire and drew nigh to a large house which was built of crystals: and the walls of the house were like a tesselated floor made of crystals, and its groundwork was of crystal… And I entered into that house, and it was hot as fire and cold as ice: there were no delights of life therein: fear covered me, and trembling got hold upon me. And as I quaked and trembled, I fell upon my face.”

1 Enoch 14 is the earliest written account we have of a mortal walking into the architecture behind the throne. A second house built entirely of flame. A throne with wheels like the sun. A figure so bright that no one could look at him. And Enoch lies face-down and shaking until a holy one makes him rise. Someone has to tell him to stand before he can hear anything.

Stanislav Grof and 1 Enoch: an ancient crystal threshold of fire beside a modern breathwork session room, the same doorway across two thousand years
One threshold, two eras: 1 Enoch and Stanislav Grof’s clinical sessions.

Then the same guide, Uriel, walks him down to the prison of fire. That scene is where the What the Hell series on this site began: What the Hell Is Hell? →

1 Enoch in the Church: Jude Quotes It, the Canon Cuts It

Here’s what nobody tells you about a book this specific: somebody official believed it. Jude 1:14 quotes 1 Enoch by name, as prophecy. Yet it never made it into the Hebrew Bible, the Catholic canon or most Protestant canons, and survives complete only in Ge’ez, the language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. My speculation, flagged clearly: the story of Enoch was too close to the Jesus story, and some things wouldn’t copy well.

The Order of Enoch: Why Enoch Was Never One Man

My hypothesis, and it is only that: Enoch was never one man. It’s a name a certain kind of person kept earning, across centuries, every time they pushed further into direct experience of the divine than the institution watching them allowed. I call it the Order of Enoch, and we’ll keep running into them for the rest of this trilogy.

Stanislav Grof and the Fire at the Threshold

🔬 Science

Stanislav Grof spent decades running clinical sessions — first with LSD, later with Holotropic Breathwork — and mapped a recurring structure he called the perinatal matrices. The third, BPM III, is a death-rebirth struggle: overwhelming pressure, fire and heat, a sense of annihilation right before a breakthrough into light and space.

Stanislav Grof’s subjects had no religious training and no shared scripture, and they kept describing something that maps onto the crystal house in structure: an unbearable, purifying threshold you have to survive before you’re let through. That’s resonance, not proof. Rick Strassman’s DMT volunteers and Benny Shanon’s ayahuasca palaces describe strikingly similar architecture, and the full episode puts all three side by side. Spiritual Emergency, or Someone Holding the Rope

Spiritual emergency or guided crossing in the Order of Enoch: a guide holds one end of a rope as a traveller steps toward a wall of fire
Same threshold, same fire: a spiritual emergency or a guided crossing.

Grof has a clinical term for what happens when this breakthrough hits someone with no preparation and no guide: spiritual emergency. Vajrayana Buddhism built the opposite: a guru, a yidam, a mandala and a sangha, so the crossing happens with someone who has already been through the door. Same threshold. Same fire. The only difference is whether anyone is holding the other end of the rope.

A wall of fire. A house of ice. A voice that has to tell you to stand up before you can hear it. The question was never whether the threshold is real. It’s whether anyone trained you for the crossing, or whether you meet it alone as a spiritual emergency.

Next time: Part 2 of the Order of Enoch: 2 Enoch, and the transfiguration nobody warns you about.

COLD OPEN 00:00 Ezekiel saw the wheels from a river in exile. He never says he walked toward them. Enoch did. He describes a house. Walls of crystal, a ceiling like stars, a floor of fire. He walks in, and it’s hotter than the sun and colder than snow at the same time, and there’s no contradiction in the text about that — that’s just what it’s like to get close. Today we walk in with him. WELCOME BACK / EARLY HOOK 00:39 Welcome back to Quantum Awareness. Ezekiel gave us the vocabulary for this season — the wheels, the throne, the terror before the transmission. Enoch is the same architecture, but he doesn’t just see it from the outside. He’s walked all the way to the door. And what’s written down about that walk is old enough, and specific enough, that a modern researcher running altered-state interviews would flag it immediately. SECTION 1 — WHAT’S ACTUALLY IN THE TEXT 01:12 Now read with me — 1 Enoch 14:8–25 “And the vision was shown to me thus: Behold, in the vision clouds invited me and a mist summoned me, and the course of the stars and the lightnings sped and hastened me, and the winds in the vision caused me to fly and lifted me upward, and bore me into heaven. And I went in till I drew nigh to a wall which is built of crystals and surrounded by tongues of fire: and it began to affright me. And I went into the tongues of fire and drew nigh to a large house which was built of crystals: and the walls of the house were like a tesselated floor made of crystals, and its groundwork was of crystal. Its ceiling was like the path of the stars and the lightnings, and between them were fiery cherubim, and their heaven was clear as water. A flaming fire surrounded the walls, and its portals blazed with fire. And I entered into that house, and it was hot as fire and cold as ice: there were no delights of life therein: fear covered me, and trembling got hold upon me. And as I quaked and trembled, I fell upon my face. And I beheld a vision, and lo! there was a second house, greater than the former, and the entire portal stood open before me, and it was built of flames of fire. And in every respect it so excelled in splendour and magnificence and extent that I cannot describe to you its splendour and its extent. And its floor was of fire, and above it were lightnings and the path of the stars, and its ceiling also was flaming fire. And I looked and saw therein a lofty throne: its appearance was as crystal, and the wheels thereof as the shining sun, and there was the vision of cherubim. And from underneath the throne came streams of flaming fire so that I could not look thereon. And the Great Glory sat thereon, and His raiment shone more brightly than the sun and was whiter than any snow. None of the angels could enter and could behold His face by reason of the magnificence and glory, and no flesh could behold Him. The flaming fire was round about Him, and a great fire stood before Him, and none around could draw nigh Him: ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him, yet He needed no counsellor. And the most holy ones who were nigh to Him did not leave by night nor depart from Him. And until then I had been prostrate on my face, trembling: and the Lord called me with His own mouth, and said to me: ‘Come hither, Enoch, and hear my word.’ And one of the holy ones came to me and waked me, and He made me rise up and approach the door: and I bowed my face downwards.” That’s 1 Enoch, chapter 14. The earliest written account we have of a mortal claiming to walk straight into the architecture behind the throne, and it does not read like a metaphor. A house of crystal. A second house built entirely of flame. A throne with wheels like the sun. A figure so bright the text says outright that no one could bear to look at him directly. Whoever put this into words had either seen something extraordinary, or built the most specific vision in ancient literature. If you ask me I would have to say, Enoch saw the clear light of mind. And why didn’t they put this in the Bible? This would have inspired so many people. SECTION 2 — THE PRISON OF FIRE (WHAT ELSE ENOCH SAW) 05:12 Now we read some more — 1 Enoch 21:1–10 “And I proceeded to where things were chaotic. And I saw there something horrible: I saw neither a heaven above nor a firmly founded earth, but a place chaotic and horrible. And there I saw seven stars of the heaven bound together in it, like great mountains and burning with fire. Then I said: ‘For what sin are they bound, and on what account have they been cast in hither?’ Then said Uriel, one of the holy angels, who was with me, and was chief over them, and said: ‘Enoch, why dost thou ask, and why art thou eager for the truth? These are of the number of the stars of heaven, which have transgressed the commandment of the Lord, and are bound here till ten thousand years, the time entailed by their sins, are consummated.’ And from thence I went to another place, which was still more horrible than the former, and I saw a horrible thing: a great fire there which burnt and blazed, and the place was cleft as far as the abyss, being full of great descending columns of fire: neither its extent or magnitude could I see, nor could I conjecture. Then I said: ‘How fearful is the place and how terrible to look upon!’ Then Uriel answered me, one of the holy angels who was with me, and said unto me: ‘Enoch, why hast thou such fear and affright?’ And I answered: ‘Because of this fearful place, and because of the spectacle of the pain.’ And he said unto me: ‘This place is the prison of the angels, and here they will be imprisoned for ever.’” That’s the same guide, a few chapters later, showing Enoch what’s underneath the throne room — seven disobedient stars bound and burning like mountains, the world itself torn open into a fiery abyss. It’s the oldest description we have of a prison built specifically for cosmic rule-breakers, and the text says flatly they’re held there forever. Notice Enoch doesn’t just get shown this and move on — he asks Uriel why, twice, and gets a straight answer both times. Even the guide has a script. What the Hell, or better yet — where the Hell is he? This verse is actually where the “What the Hell” series started on the site — if you want to go deeper on hell as a location versus hell as a state of mind, that’s already up there. SECTION 3 — THE CHURCH’S PROBLEM WITH THIS BOOK 08:00 Here’s the thing nobody tells you about a book this specific: somebody official actually believed it. Not folklore-official. Scripture-official. Jude 1:14 “And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints.” Here’s the part that should surprise people: that’s the New Testament quoting 1 Enoch directly, by name, as prophecy — not folklore, not myth, prophecy. This book was not some obscure heresy nobody respected. A canonical letter cites a non-canonical one as authoritative, by name, and nobody blinks. And yet 1 Enoch never made it into the Hebrew Bible, the Catholic canon, or most Protestant canons. It survived complete in only one place: Ge’ez, the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, where it’s canonical scripture to this day. Early church fathers were split. Tertullian defended it explicitly in On the Apparel of Women, arguing that since Jude cited Enoch as prophecy, Christians had no grounds to reject it — He wrote that Enoch ‘possesses a testimony in the Apostle Jude.’ By the fourth and fifth centuries the mood had turned: Augustine, in City of God, granted Enoch may have written something true but denied it canonical standing because ‘it was impossible to ascertain whether these were his genuine writings’; Jerome, in On Illustrious Men, called it apocryphal outright and noted that some in his own day doubted Jude for exactly that reason — for quoting it. Personally, I think, and I’ll flag it clearly, that the story of Enoch was just too close to the Jesus story and some things wouldn’t copy well without raising too many unanswerable questions. The Bible has enough of those anyway. There’s something else worth naming here, even this early — I don’t think this was ever one man’s problem with one church. I don’t think Enoch was ever just one man. I think it’s a name a certain kind of person kept earning, across centuries, every time they pushed further into direct experience of the divine than whatever institution was watching them allowed. We’re going to keep running into them for the rest of this trilogy. SECTION 4 — THE GROF COMPARISON 10:28 Now we need the lens of science, to see how a modern perspective would interpret Enoch. Stanislav Grof spent decades running clinical sessions — first with LSD, later with Holotropic Breathwork — and mapped a recurring structure he called the perinatal matrices. BPM III in particular: a death-rebirth struggle, overwhelming pressure, fire and heat, a sense of annihilation right before a breakthrough into light and space. Grof’s subjects, with no religious training and no shared scripture, kept independently describing something structurally identical to Enoch’s crystal house — an unbearable, purifying threshold you have to survive before you’re let through. Hit follow. Enoch didn’t ask permission to walk into that fire, so neither should you — for this channel, specifically. SECTION 5 — THE STRASSMAN COMPARISON 11:21 Rick Strassman ran the first FDA-approved human DMT studies in the United States, from 1990 to 1995, at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, where he held a tenured post as Associate Professor of Psychiatry — roughly four hundred doses given to sixty volunteers, published in 2001 as DMT: The Spirit Molecule. His volunteers, dosed in a clinical room, routinely described being pulled into a structure they couldn’t have anticipated — intense pressure, a sense of breaking through a membrane or wall, arrival in a space that felt more architecturally real than ordinary reality, often with an overwhelming presence waiting on the other side. We’re paraphrasing that pattern rather than quoting a specific volunteer here — no single quotation does it justice, and we’d rather describe the shape accurately than dress up a paraphrase as a verbatim quote. Strassman’s later book, DMT and the Soul of Prophecy, published in 2014, makes this comparison explicit himself — he argues the Hebrew Bible’s model of prophecy actually fits what his DMT volunteers described better than a Buddhist framework does, because both assume a real, external, independent spiritual world rather than a dissolving sense of self. He directly connects that model to the prophetic and Merkabah tradition Ezekiel handed us. We’re not the first to draw this line. Strassman drew it too, from the clinical side. SECTION 6 — BENNY SHANON AND THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE VISION 13:01 One more voice belongs in this conversation. Benny Shanon was a professor of cognitive psychology at Hebrew University of Jerusalem who spent years studying ayahuasca — by his own account drinking it several hundred times, and compiling roughly 2,500 documented experiences, his own and others’, into Antipodes of the Mind, published by Oxford University Press in 2002. One of his central findings: people from unrelated cultures, with no contact with each other, kept independently reporting the same handful of visionary categories — among them, in a phrase from a contemporary review of his work, ‘jaguars and snakes, or palaces and royalty.’ Enoch’s crystal house, with its throne and its Great Glory, is exactly that second category: a palace, and the single most royal figure imaginable, arrived at by a specific, repeatable route. No wonder the ancients thought they could find God. Shanon went further in a much more provocative direction. In a 2008 paper in the journal Time and Mind, titled Biblical Entheogens: A Speculative Hypothesis, he proposed — admittedly speculatively, in his own words — that Moses’s experiences at Sinai, including the burning bush and receiving the commandments, may have involved a plant-based visionary brew, given that acacia, a DMT-containing plant, and Peganum harmala, a source of MAO-inhibiting harmala alkaloids, both grow in that exact region. He wasn’t smuggling this in quietly. He called it speculation outright and left the judgment to his readers. And I am following his lead past the point of this being comfortable. You be your own judge. SECTION 7 — THE DHARMA CONNECTION 14:55 Here’s where this stops being a curiosity and starts being instruction. Grof has an actual clinical term for what happens when this kind of breakthrough hits someone with zero preparation, zero guide: spiritual emergency. People end up in psych wards for showing up unannounced at the same door Enoch walked through on purpose. Vajrayana Buddhism built the opposite of that. A guru, a yidam, a mandala — and Sangha: people who have walked the path before you — a whole structure wrapped around the exact terror Enoch describes, the fire, the voice that has to command you to stand before you can hear it — so the crossing doesn’t happen to you alone. It happens with someone who’s already been through the door. Same threshold. Same fire. The only variable is whether anyone’s holding the other end of the rope. And Enoch had a guide too, by the way — that’s who showed him the prison back in section two. He wasn’t freelancing this. CLOSE 15:58 A wall of fire. A house of ice. A voice that has to tell you to stand up before you can hear it. Enoch didn’t describe a metaphor. He described a threshold — and centuries later, in a lab in New Mexico with no scripture in the room, strangers started describing the same one. The question was never whether the threshold is real. It’s what happens to you on the other side of it — and whether anyone trained you for the crossing. LATE CTA / NEXT-EPISODE TEASER 16:30 Thank you for listening to the very end.
