Process Over Plant — What the Ancient Pharmakon Knew and We Forgot

There is a Greek word that should have warned us.

Pharmakon. It means remedy. It also means poison. And it also means drug, and spell, and charm. One word carrying all of it at once, with no ambiguity a Greek speaker would have noticed — because to them it was not ambiguous. It was precise.

We hear a contradiction. They heard a variable, or an adjustable frequency.

Because the thing that decided which one you got was never the plant. It was what you did to it.

The Pharmakon That Means Both

A pharmakon is not a category of substance. It is a category of relationship — between a material, a preparation, a measure, and a body. The same root, dug from the same ground on the same morning, becomes a medicine or a corpse depending entirely on what happens between the digging and the drinking.

Plato built an argument on exactly that. In the Phaedrus he calls writing itself a pharmakon — a remedy for forgetting that is simultaneously a poison to memory, because a culture that writes things down stops holding them in mind. He is not being clever. He is using the word as it was meant: a thing whose effect is decided by how it is used, and in what measure.

And the word appears in the oldest story we have about a sacred drink. In Book Ten of the Odyssey, Circe prepares a kykeon — barley meal, wine, honey — and into it she puts pharmaka. That is Homer, eighth century BCE, the earliest surviving description of the Greek barley pharmakon. The first time anyone writes it down, someone is adding drugs to it.

Theophrastus makes the principle concrete. Aristotle’s successor, the man we call the Father of Botany, writing in the fourth century BCE, discusses aconite — the queen of poisons, monkshood, wolf’s bane. What he records is not that it is deadly. Everyone knew that. He reports that in the hands of someone who knows the preparation, the timing of death could be chosen: two months, or two years.

Sit with that. Not whether it kills. When.


This is an advanced technology.

That is process control so fine the plant has become almost incidental to it. The expertise was never the plant. It was the pharmakon itself — the whole relationship of material, measure and method.

The Operations

So here is the half of the story that always gets skipped.

When we ask what the ancients used, we are asking the easy question. The interesting one is what they did — and the operations available to an ancient preparer were more numerous, and more consequential, than the plants.

Harvest, and when. Dry, or use fresh. Grind. Crush. Press. Steep, cold or hot. Infuse. Decoct. Filter, and through what. Ferment, or deliberately prevent fermentation. Reduce. Heat. Burn. Store, and how long. Time the administration. Measure the dose.

Every one of those is a variable. Every one changes what the pharmakon becomes.


A single change, a completely different outcome. 

And we have proof the ancients knew it, because they named their most sacred pharmakon after one of these operations.

The Berkeley Iranist Martin Schwartz traces Old Indic soma and Old Iranian haoma to a common Indo-Iranian root meaning to press in a mortar. The word is formed with a suffix that in both languages marks ritual objects and institutions — the same formation that gives hymn from praise, and oblation from pour. Soma does not mean a plant. It means that which is pressed. The pharmakon is named for the press.

The plant is the constant. These are the variables. Process over plant.

Schwartz is explicit that haoma was never a general name for the plant. It named one ritual manifestation of it — plant, god and pressed juice together, inseparable from the act of pressing. The texts use the word, he notes, precisely because the texts describe the plant in the context of being pressed.

And the Indian branch did the same thing with a different operation. Every hymn in Mandala Nine of the Rigveda — a hundred and fourteen of them — addresses Soma Pavamana. Pavamana is a present participle. It means being purified. Being filtered. In the act of clarifying.

Not the plant. Not the god at rest. The substance mid-process, caught in the strainer.

Press, strain, settle. Three operations named in order, in the oldest religious poetry in the Indo-European world. India named the filtering, Iran named the pressing, and neither of them named a plant. Process over plant, four thousand years ago, encoded in the name of the sacrament itself.

The Solvent Decides

Of all those operations, one does more work than any other and is almost never discussed. What you dissolve the pharmakon in.

Whether that happened at Eleusis is contested and stays contested until someone tests the vessels. The chemistry is not contested. A water pharmakon and an alcohol pharmakon made from the same grain are not the same drink.

That refusal is normally read as ritual propriety, or mourning, or poetry. In this reading — and this is mine, not scholarship — it looks like a specification. She is not declining a drink. She is naming a solvent. I am not claiming this is true. I am claiming it is where the line goes when I follow it past the point of comfort.

The Most Ordinary Drink in Greece

And here is what was sitting in plain sight the whole time.

Barley steeped in water has a name. The Greeks called it ptisane. It is one of the oldest named preparations in Western medicine — Hippocrates gives it substantial attention in Regimen in Acute Diseases, Galen writes on it at length, and the word survives in the French tisane.

Ptisane was not exotic. It was what you gave the sick and the recovering. Nourishing, gentle, and safer than the well because the water had been boiled. Everyone made it. Nobody thought it remarkable.

Now hold that beside the kykeon — barley, water, and a herb — and notice how little separates them. You do not have to make that connection yourself. An ancient source already did: the lexicographer Hesychius of Alexandria defines ptisane and kykeon as the same thing.

But he is a Greek lexicographer stating plainly that the sacred pharmakon of the Mysteries and the barley water you gave a fever patient were the same preparation.

Which reframes the whole mystery. The kykeon was not some unheard-of brew concocted behind sealed doors. It was the most ordinary pharmakon in Greece — with something in it.

Follow the same preparation across five centuries and it appears in three registers. In Homer it is food and medicine: a kykeon mixed for the wounded Machaon, who is the son of Asclepius, god of healing. In the Hymn to Demeter it is ritual, with water deliberately substituted for wine. In Hippocrates it is a prescription. One pharmakon, three uses, and nobody in antiquity seems to have found that strange.

It never went away either. Barley water is still drunk wherever barley grows — jau ka sattu in Pakistan, roasted barley tea across East Asia, bottled lemon barley water at Wimbledon. The base of the most guarded sacrament in the ancient world is on supermarket shelves.

And where that grain does go wrong today, it goes wrong differently — which is itself the argument. In 1975 an outbreak of ergot poisoning ran through parts of India, and it was not Saint Anthony’s Fire. Nobody lost a limb. The symptoms were giddiness, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting. The crop was pearl millet, and the fungus was a different species from European rye ergot, producing an entirely different set of alkaloids rather than the vasoconstrictors that burn the extremities off a medieval peasant. Three years later a separate outbreak in Ethiopia produced exactly that gangrene, from a different species again. Same genus, three grains, three continents, three completely different syndromes.

The fungus is not one thing. Neither is the poison. And neither, it follows, is whatever pharmakon was in the cup.

Which leaves an obvious question nobody has answered. Hofmann proposed the solubility split in 1978, and in the half-century since the argument has been fought almost entirely over archaeology — which vessels, which residues, which sites. As far as I can determine the chemistry itself has never been run: nobody has taken ergotized barley, prepared it the several ways the ancient world prepared barley, and measured what ends up in the liquid. The experiment is not difficult. It has not been done, at least in modern times.

That is the same silence as the untested cups in Attica. Not a mystery. A question nobody has picked up.

The Route Decides

The second operation nobody discusses is how the pharmakon gets in. The ancient world used at least three routes, deliberately, for different purposes.

Drinking is the one we default to. But it was never the only door.

Burning is the second, and there is now hard evidence from a place nobody expected. At Tel Arad in the Negev, a Judahite shrine of the eighth century BCE held two limestone altars. When the residues were finally analysed and published in 2020, the smaller altar carried cannabis mixed with animal dung — which burns hot enough to volatilise it. The larger carried frankincense mixed with animal fat, on the same principle. The shrine’s layout is a scaled-down version of the Temple in Jerusalem.

That is not iconography or inference. It is residue analysis, peer-reviewed, on excavated altars from an Israelite sanctuary — deliberately combusted, deliberately combined with a fuel chosen to reach volatilisation temperature. Somebody understood exactly what they were doing.

An enclosed room, a resin, and a congregation breathing for an hour is a delivery system. The pharmakon arrives in the air, and the architecture is part of the dose. They were hotboxing!

Anointing is the third route, and it is the one that never left. Exodus thirty specifies a holy anointing oil — myrrh, cassia, calamus and cinnamon in olive oil — and then restricts the formula by law, with a penalty for making it for personal use. A legally monopolised transdermal pharmakon, written into scripture. Some scholars argue the calamus is actually cannabis; that is genuinely contested and I flag it as such. The passage does not depend on it. Whatever was in the oil, the recipe was controlled and the application restricted.

Then follow the word. Christos means anointed one. The central title of the largest religion on earth describes an oil being applied to skin, and Christian chrism descends directly from that same formula. And at the other end of Europe, centuries later, the witches’ flying ointment recorded in trial documents was tropane-bearing plant matter in a fat base, applied to the body, producing the sensation of flight.

In a Greco-Egyptian papyrus in Paris, the text usually called the Mithras Liturgy, a plant named kentritis is not drunk at all. Its juice is mixed with rose oil and smeared over the eyes. Nobody today knows what kentritis was.

Three routes, three onsets, three durations — one pharmakon, three ways in. Same territory, different doors — and choosing the door is another decision with nothing to do with which plant is on the table.

Crushing Is the Choice — and the Cover

Now the operation that decides everything and hides itself while doing it.

Ergot grows on grain as a sclerotium: hard, dark, curved, several times the size of a healthy kernel, and completely unmistakable to anyone who has handled grain. It does not blend in.

And there is a standard, ancient, entirely mundane way of removing it. Steep the grain in water at the start of processing and the sclerotia float — they are less dense than sound barley. They rise, you skim them off, you discard them. Grain-cleaning by flotation is old, simple technology and it works.

Which means something uncomfortable. A competent preparer could remove the ergot — so its presence in a finished pharmakon was, at least potentially, a decision rather than an accident.

But watch the next step. You cannot make anything from grain without crushing it — and the moment it is milled the sclerotia vanish, ground into the flour, indistinguishable and invisible. The exact operation that forces the choice is the operation that erases the evidence of it.

This is why medieval bread poisoning was endemic and untraceable. Nobody could see it. And it is also, I think, why so little survives in the record about deliberate use — because after milling, intention and accident are chemically identical.

The crushing is the choice. And the crushing is the cover.

The Explorers, Not the Substances

I want to say the thing this series has been circling.

We talk about ancient plants as though the plants were the discovery. They were not. What was discovered — slowly, expensively, by people whose names we will never have — was a body of procedure. The pharmakon was the whole of it, not the leaf. What to pick, when, what to do to it, what to dissolve it in, how much, how often, through which door, and in whose company.

That is not a substance. That is a craft, and it lived in people.

Which is why every serious tradition surrounded it with a priesthood, and why every honest modern researcher rebuilt the same scaffolding from scratch. When Stanislav Grof screened his subjects, controlled the room, trained the sitters and built integration into the protocol, he was not innovating. He was recovering something the old formulators would have found obvious. Set and setting is not a nineteen-sixties phrase. It is the oldest professional standard in the field.

And here is what moves me about it. These people had no chemistry, no microscopes, no way to isolate a compound or name a molecule. What they had was attention, transmission, and an enormous tolerance for patient generational observation. They were explorers of consciousness with nothing but their own nervous systems as instruments, and they mapped the territory anyway. Some called it god, some called it the forest, others soul or mind. One thing for sure, no matter what you call it, they were searching with whatever skilful means were available to them. 

The plant was never the technology. They were.

The Pharmacy Nobody Buried

Every other tradition in this series lost its procedure. The kykeon’s recipe went into the ground with the last initiates. The Book of Enoch was cut from the canon. Even at Pompeii, where a volcano preserved an entire working pharmacy under ash, nearly half the material is now readable.

One tradition simply kept going.

Sowa Rigpa — the Tibetan medical system, the science of healing — is still transmitted, still taught, still practised. Its materia medica runs to hundreds of substances, prepared by procedures that are themselves transmitted, and compounded not into a universal formula but for this patient, with this constitution, in this season, at this moment.

Menu, not recipe. A range, and the trained judgment to choose from it.

There is no missing fraction in Sowa Rigpa, no gap where a recipe used to be, because the line was never cut. It went hand to hand, teacher to student, through precisely the centuries in which the West was losing almost everything these posts have been reconstructing from ash and fragments and silence.

It is the control case for the whole pharmakon argument. When a tradition of consciousness technology is not suppressed, this is what survives: not a secret, not a relic, not a legend about a lost cup or Holy Grail — a working practice, with the procedure still attached, and someone alive who knows how to perform it.

The ancient pharmakon was never the plant. It was the process, and the person holding it.

We forgot that. They did not.
